How we mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

January 14, 2011
Rosemary Byrnes, Senior Program Officer, U.S. Youth Economic Opportunities, Citi Foundation

Volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a Citi tradition. Instead of taking a day off, many Citi employees, family and friends make it a "day on" to keep Dr. King's legacy of service alive by helping those in need. Citi's Community Development team, African Heritage Networks and Volunteer Councils have organized a range of volunteer opportunities across the United States for Monday, Jan. 17. For example:

  • In Tucson, Arizona, Citi employees are hosting a fundraiser to honor those lost and wounded in the January 8th shooting. Proceeds will benefit a local food bank.
  • In Chicago, Illinois, Citi volunteers will help interview the applicants for 45 affordable rental housing units in the newly completed Dr. King Legacy Apartments, built on the site of Dr. King's only residence in the Northern U.S. Citi Community Capital helped finance this project and Citi Community Development assisted with grants for pre-development costs.
  • In Dallas, Texas, Citi employees will join forces with the United Way on "Earn It! Keep It! Save It!," a program helping people who make less than $50,000 get free tax help from trained volunteers.

Our effort is part of a wider one led by the Corporation for National and Community Service making this holiday the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Citi and Citi Foundation are also proud to support CNCS's ongoing initiative, United We Serve, a national call to service now engaging more than 5 million Americans.

Encouraging the success of a community requires more than philanthropy. Through volunteer opportunities, our employees connect to their communities and develop the skills to become important agents of change. By celebrating and recognizing volunteerism, Citi hopes to inspire individuals in their communities.
