The scene at Citi Pond.

January 25, 2011
Bill Brown, Manhattan Division Director, Citibank

Working with New York City's Citibank branches brings me a lot of joy, particularly serving our large and diverse customer base here in the five boroughs. One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to go and visit the communities that our branches serve. Recently, I was fortunate enough to represent Citi at the tree lighting at Citi Pond at Bryant Park. Citi Pond is situated in such an amazing location, amid the scenery of Bryant Park, the New York City skyline, and an array of eclectic shops -- all in close proximity to eight of our Citibank branches. It doesn't hurt that the skating on this beautiful rink is free! We've sponsored Citi Pond for the past six years, and it has truly become a New York City landmark for residents and visitors alike. I like to think of it as New York's neighborhood rink.

At the lighting, the crowd which included the family that donated the tree and some special guests from the South Queens Boys and Girls Club, had the chance to see several skating and musical performances. These included appearances by Olympic figure skater Michael Weiss and United States synchronized skating team, the Haydenettes. Michael Weiss even did a backflip on the ice! They also were treated to musical performances by the trio Wilson Phillips, pianist Ethan Broner, Matisse, Mateo, and the casts of Rock of Ages and Billy Elliot. It was an evening that truly captured the spirit of New York City and typified Citi's connection to this wonderful community. If you haven't had a chance to come out to Citi Pond, I encourage you to bring your family and friends before it closes for the season on February 27. Have fun.
