Citi's Buiter to receive honorary degree

Today, Citi Chief Economist Willem Buiter will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Amsterdam for his research in the field of macro-economics. A native of the Netherlands, Buiter joined Citi in January of 2010. Prior to his work at Citi, Buiter was Professor of Political Economy at the London School of Economics. He has served in many public service capacities, including Chief Economist for the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development and as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. He has been a consultant to the IMF, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank, the European Commission and an advisor to many central banks and finance ministries.

Willem has held a number of leading academic positions, including Cassel Professor of Money & Banking at the London School of Economics, Professor in Economics at Yale University, and Professor of International Macroeconomics at Cambridge University. Willem has a B.A. in Economics from Cambridge University and a PhD in Economics from Yale University. He has been a member of the British Academy since 1998 and was awarded the CBE in 2000 for services to economics.
