Celebrating African American History Month at Citi

Citi's commitment to diversity spans the entire company -- and is particularly visible through the activities of Citi's Employee Networks and through the events and activities designated to celebrate the culture, history and contributions of various communities. February, for example, is African American History Month, declared by Presidential Proclamation as a time to "celebrate the rich legacy of African Americans and honor the remarkable contributions they have made."

Across the country, Citi's African Heritage Networks (AHN) provide a wide range of educational, cultural and fellowship-building opportunities during African American History Month. In a very special presentation, the Baltimore/Washington AHN hosted two Tuskegee Airmen to talk about their experiences in World War II. Citi employee Annette Griffin said, "Whether it's with an event like that, or featuring special dishes in the cafeteria, or other programs," Annette said, "African American History Month is a way to spread both understanding and camaraderie."

In Columbus, Ohio, Jenine Johnson notes that Citi's college recruitment efforts have had a major impact on diversity in her metropolitan area. The Columbus AHN launched officially on February 8, 2012 with approximately 50 members and, since then, has been providing many networking, mentoring and recruitment opportunities as well as community outreach in partnership with local organizations.

"As inclusion becomes more commonplace, that potentially could lead to complacency," said Willie Henry Jr., co-chair of the AHN in Jacksonville, Florida. "These months are a reminder and a way to refresh our commitment while embracing the histories and contributions of various groups." This month, Jacksonville hosted Citi African American Community Health & Wellness Day with free cholesterol/blood pressure screenings and information on heart health, diabetes, and how to live and eat healthy.

Citi has a total of eight employee networks dedicated to the African Heritage Affinity located in some of our largest and most important markets. In addition to the aforementioned activities in the Baltimore-Washington, DC area, Columbus, and Jacksonville, African American History Month celebrations took place in Tampa Bay, Florida, New York City, St. Louis, Missouri, Dallas-Ft. Worth and San Antonio, Texas.
