Citi a Finalist for U.S. Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award

May 25, 2012
Ruth Christopherson, Senior Vice President, Citi Community Development and Citi Salutes, Retired Colonel, U.S. Air National Guard

This week, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) named Citi as one of 30 finalists for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the U.S. Department of Defense's highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of Guard and Reserve employees. A review board comprised of military and civilian leaders selected the 30 employers from more than 3,200 nominations received earlier this year from Guardsmen, Reservists or family members. Employers named as finalists for the award distinguish themselves not only for respecting the employment and reemployment rights of Guard and Reserve members, but for actively creating opportunities to assist and support the service of both Guard and Reserve employees and their families. The Department of Defense will announce the 15 recipients of the 2012 Freedom Award early this summer.

Being named a Freedom Award finalist highlights Citi's role as an established leader in the national effort to hire and support veterans and active-duty servicemembers, including those in the Guard and Reserve, and it's the latest achievement in a coordinated, firm-wide effort in this area. In November, Vikram Pandit signed the Statement of Employer Support for the Guard & Reserve. Earlier this month, we launched Citi Salutes, a one-stop resource that consolidates all of Citi's programs, products and partnerships that support the greater veterans community. And next month, we'll once again be helping to lead the second annual Veterans on Wall Street conference and job fair in New York, an initiative co-founded by Citi to develop career opportunities in the financial services industry for veterans.

As the nation pauses to observe Memorial Day this weekend, we salute our Citi colleagues for fostering a workplace that embraces and values the patriotism and sacrifice associated with military service. Citi is the only financial services company to be named a Freedom Award finalist, and on behalf of the members of Citi's Military Veterans Networks, particularly those currently serving at home and abroad, we deeply appreciate your ongoing support.
