"Five Messages to My Younger Self" Roundup

April 03, 2013

In honor of International Women's Day and Women's History Month, we asked a number of accomplished Citi women what messages they would tell their younger selves, knowing where they are now in their careers.

We touched upon some universal topics such as networking, entrepreneurship, career advancement, leadership and being a working mom.

As March draws to a close, view the roundup below of some of the most insightful and poignant "Messages to My Younger Self" we received from our Citi women.

• "Be adaptable. Be a leader for all seasons. You will need to lead through good times, bad times and times of change. This will require adaptability in your skills." - Philippa Nesbit on Leadership

• "Be good to yourself! Take a walk, enjoy a good book, laugh with an old friend and breathe. The positive energy these actions create can have a great impact on your child and your family." -Ana Duarte on Being a Working Mom

• "Treat everyone with respect. The most junior staffers will someday be in the most senior positions of power--and they will have long memories." - Candi Wolff on Networking

• "Decide on your own personal definition of success. Don't focus on titles or levels but rather are you passionate about your job? Does it give you meaning and purpose? Have patience-- experience is rich and it all adds value."--Andrea Pozzi on Career Advancement

• "Start thinking about return on investment. Whether your available resource is time, money or political or emotional capital, invest it consciously; it isn't free. Differentiating your idea from the competition will almost always reap more reward than replicating something that already exists." - Alejandra Villagra on Entrepreneurship

• "Take on a positive frame of mind. Contextualize experiences, especially those that are challenging or stressful. Try not to view events through a negative lens. Constraints can become opportunities and our greatest perceived failings can be a source of even greater learning." - Ireti Samuel-Ogbu on Leadership

• "You don't have to do this alone...Determine what your hourly rate is or what an hour of your time is worth. If you can find someone else to do that task for you at a lower rate, have them do it and free up your time to do something else more valuable."--Wendy Lofgren-Aviles on Being a Working Mom
