Weather: There is great variety in the climate, largely determined by altitude. It is mild year-round in the mountain valleys, with a humid subtropical climate in coastal areas and rainforest in lowlands. The Pacific coastal area has a tropical climate with a severe rainy season. The climate in the Andean highlands is temperate and relatively dry, and the Amazon basin on the eastern side of the mountains shares the climate of other rainforest zones.

Ecuadorian Cuisine/Best Places to Dine: Ecuadorian cuisine is quite varied, ranging from delicious fresh sea food, (ceviche, typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices, is a specialty) to hot creamy potato soup (locro) or fried pork meat accompanied with potato cakes (fritada and llapingachos). Two of the best places to dine in Quito are La Choza Restautante and Barlovento.

Favorite Local Beverage: Canelazo, It typically consists of aguardiente (sugar cane alcohol), sugar or panela and agua de canela (water boiled with cinnamon).

Best Tourist Sites: Galapagos Islands, the mountains and the rainforest

Citi Ecuador just celebrated its 55th anniversary.

What business units operate in your country?

The Institutional Client Group and the Affluent, High Net Worth and Specialized Services (AHS) for individuals.

What are the opportunities and challenges of doing business in your country?

Citi is the only foreign bank operating in Ecuador, which is a unique opportunity for us to serve multinationals and regional companies by leveraging our global network. Also our global product capabilities give us a competitive advantage. Our greatest challenge is the macroeconomic environment in Ecuador and tight market liquidity, which requires us to be cautious and work within tight limits.

Personal/ Professional Background

Where were you born?

I was born in Poland.

What did you study that helped you prepare for a career in banking, and were there any subjects you realized subsequently would have helped you?

I studied food science, economics and marketing in England. A career in banking was not in my dreams. I knew I wanted to work for a multinational company, gain experience in different geographies and among different cultures. I thought the food industry was universal, and this is why I chose that field. I started working in banking during a summer internship at Citi, which was when I first realized that a career in banking was what I wanted. Clearly it would have helped me to study finance and accounting, but to make up I had to catch up in my free time. I was lucky to have great managers early in my career, from whom I learned on the job.

What other roles and countries have you worked in at Citi?

I started in Citi Ecuador in 1994 as a Relationship Manager in the Corporate Bank in Quito. After three years, I moved to Guayaquil where I managed the asset-based finance product. In 1999, I moved to the Dominican Republic as head of Asset-Based Finance and the small and medium enterprises client segment. After four years, I moved to the U.S. and joined Audit and Risk Review in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where I was part of the corporate credit audit team covering Latin America. In 2004, I joined Citi Handlowy Poland, initially in the risk management organization. I worked in Poland for 10 years, with my last role as head of the Commercial Bank. In 2013 I moved back to LATAM, this time to Colombia, where I headed the Treasury & Trade Solutions (TTS) business. Since last November, I am back in Ecuador as CCO.

Did you choose any of those roles thinking they would prepare you for a role as CCO?

Yes, definitely. I always thought the CCO role was very interesting, and I wanted to do it. With that goal in mind, I tried to gain a variety of experiences in different businesses and also in risk management and in a control function such as audit. In addition, I knew that gaining experience in different geographies would prepare me for a CCO role.

Role and Responsibilities

How do you maintain work-life balance? What do you do in your free time?

I have three small children, and my work-life balance means organizing my day in a way that let me spend the most time with them. I come to work early, right after my kids leave for school, and most often return early to spend time with them in the evening. I dedicate my free time to my family. We love traveling, visiting friends and doing a variety of activities together. I'm a strong believer that a proper work-life balance is critical to success and can be accomplished with the right attitude and effort.

Clima: Hay gran variedad en el clima, que en gran medida está determinado por la altitud. Es moderado todo el año en los valles montañosos, húmedo subtropical en las áreas costeras, y tenemos la selva tropical en las tierras bajas. Sobre la costa del Pacífico, el clima es tropical con una temporada de fuertes lluvias. El clima en la región andina es templado y relativamente seco, mientras que en la cuenca del Amazonas, al este de las montañas, el clima es similar al de otras zonas de selvas tropicales.

Gastronomía/Mejores lugares para comer en Ecuador: La gastronomía ecuatoriana es muy variada: se puede comer pescado fresco delicioso (el ceviche, en general preparado con pescado crudo fresco curado en jugos de cítricos, es una especialidad), la tradicional sopa crema de papa caliente (locro), o carne de cerdo frita acompañada con tortillas de puré de papa (fritada y llapingachos). Dos de los mejores lugares para comer en Quito son La Choza Restaurante y Barlovento.

Bebida local favorita: Canelazo. En general es aguardiente (alcohol de caña de azúcar), azúcar o panela, y agua de canela.

Mejores lugares turísticos: Islas Galápagos, las montañas y la selva.

Lo que amo de Ecuador: La amabilidad de su gente, la gastronomía y, como Ecuador no es una gran geografía, es fácil viajar y experimentar la belleza de sus montañas, sus costas y su selva.

Como Citi es el único banco extranjero que opera en Ecuador, esto representa una oportunidad única para nosotros de atender a multinacionales y compañías regionales aprovechando nuestra red. Además, nuestras capacidades de productos globales nos dan una ventaja competitiva. El reto es el entorno macroeconómico en Ecuador, y la ajustada liquidez en el mercado, que nos exige ser muy cautelosos y trabajar dentro de límites estrechos.

Antecedentes personales / profesionales

¿Dónde nació?

Nací en Polonia.

¿Qué estudios cursó que le resultaron de ayuda para prepararse para una carrera en banca? ¿Qué materias piensa que le hubieran sido útiles?

Estudié ingeniería en alimentos, economía y marketing en Inglaterra. En ese momento no soñaba con hacer carrera en banca. Sabía que quería trabajar para una multinacional, adquirir experiencia en distintas geografías y entre distintas culturas. Pensé que la industria de alimentos era universal, y por eso elegí ese campo. Comencé a trabajar en banca durante una pasantía de verano en Citi y ahí me di cuenta de que una carrera en banca era lo que quería. Claramente me hubiera ayudado estudiar finanzas y contabilidad. Tuve que ponerme al día en mi tiempo libre, y tuve la suerte de tener excelentes gerentes en los comienzos de mi carrera, de quienes aprendí.

¿En qué otros roles y países trabajó dentro de Citi?

Comencé en Citi Ecuador en 1994 como Relationship Manager en Banca Corporativa en Quito. Al cabo de tres años, me trasladé a Guayaquil, donde administré el producto de financiamiento basado en activos. En 1999, me mudé a la República Dominicana como responsable de Asset-Based Finance y del segmento de clientes PYME. Después de cuatro años, pasé a EE.UU., donde me uní al área de Auditoría y Revisión de Riesgo en Fort Lauderdale, Florida, e integré el equipo de auditoría de crédito corporativo que cubría Latinoamérica. En 2004, me incorporé a Citi Handlowy Polonia, inicialmente en la organización de administración de riesgos. Trabajé en Polonia durante 10 años y mi último rol fue Head of Commercial Bank. En 2013, regresé a LATAM, esta vez a Colombia, donde lideré el negocio Treasury & Trade Solutions (TTS). Desde noviembre pasado, estoy de regreso en Ecuador como CCO.

¿Eligió alguno de esos roles pensando que la prepararían para ser CCO?

Sí, sin dudas. Siempre pensé que el rol de CCO era muy interesante, y quería hacer esto. Por eso, traté de ganar experiencia en distintos negocios y también en la gestión de riesgos y en una función de control, como auditoría. Además, sabía que tener experiencia en distintas geografías me prepararía mejor para un puesto de CCO.

Rol y responsabilidades

¿Cómo mantiene el equilibrio entre vida profesional y personal? ¿Qué actividades realiza en su tiempo libre?

Tengo tres niños pequeños, y mi equilibrio entre vida profesional y personal significa organizar mi día de tal forma que pueda pasar tiempo con ellos. Llego al trabajo temprano, justo después de que mis hijos parten para el colegio, y la mayoría de las veces regreso a casa temprano para dedicarles tiempo durante el atardecer. Durante el tiempo libre, me dedico a mi familia. Nos encanta viajar, visitar amigos y hacer diversas actividades juntos. Estoy convencida de que un adecuado equilibrio entre vida profesional y personal es fundamental y puede alcanzarse.
