• A Transformational Approach to Grantmaking

By Anne Evens, Chief Executive Officer of Elevate Energy December 19, 2017 11:30 AM

For the first time since our founding in 2000, Elevate Energy – a Chicago-based community development agency that helps people do more with less energy – participated in a funding opportunity that enabled us to think transformationally about how we achieve our mission. By providing multi-year, unrestricted grant support, the Citi Foundation’s Community Progress Makers Fund helped our organization develop the evidence and business case to dramatically increase clean energy investments in low-income communities. But it’s more than that. The Fund is an innovative approach to grant-making that pushes organizations to transform the world by first transforming themselves.

  • Citi Turkey and Inclusive Finance: Driving Inclusive Economic Progress by Deepening Client Supply Chains

By Monika Jonusauskiene, Vice President, Citi Inclusive Finance, and Mert Eren, Vice President, Citi Commercial Bank, Citi Turkey November 27, 2017 01:45 PM

Turkey is the world’s largest exporter of dried fruits and nuts; its agriculture industry employs roughly 15 million people, nearly half of which are women. So if you’ve bought a package of dried figs or dates recently, they probably originated from Turkey. And if the fruit you bought was organic, or if you bought it from a large supermarket in the U.S. or Europe, the supplier was very likely Işık Tarım – one of Turkey’s leading organic produce manufacturers, a Citi Commercial Bank Turkey client, and the first non-financial institution to receive financing through Citi’s partnership with the U.S. Government’s Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) under its Global Inclusive Finance Framework.

  • Progress Towards a More Inclusive Chicago: How Entrepreneurship is Revitalizing the City’s African American Neighborhoods

By Erica King, VP of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives Micro Finance Group November 06, 2017 02:30 PM

From reading the news, you’d be forgiven for thinking the economy is booming for everyone. National unemployment is at record lows and the stock market at record highs. But in neighborhoods like Pullman on the Southside of Chicago, and in many other cities around the country, those heady headlines make for cold comfort. The unemployment rate in the Windy City among African American residents is a staggering 25 percent - more than 5 times the national rate.

  • Impact, Pivot, Repeat: Community Progress Makers on Meaningful Support & Meeting Our Cities’ Toughest Challenges

By Luis Granados, Executive Director, Mission Economic Development Agency; Emily Gresham, Assistant Vice President of Research, Florida International University and Co-Founder of StartUP FIU; Lisbeth Shepherd, Executive Director, Green City Force November 01, 2017 09:00 AM

From creating jobs to expanding affordable housing, cities face economic challenges that grow increasingly complex as more people move to urban centers in search of economic opportunity. Variables including policy changes, budget cuts, and local crises constantly impact how (and how well) community-based organizations can respond. While we need all the help we can get, some philanthropic support can be prescriptive and overly restrictive about our approach and how we define success. To truly accelerate progress, nonprofits need support in a form that encourages us to adapt to external shifts and develop new ways of addressing long-standing issues. The Citi Foundation’s Community Progress Makers Fund helped us do just that. The $20 million, multi-year initiative provided unrestricted grant support to 40 nonprofits in six U.S. cities, enabling a variety of organizations to pilot innovative solutions, increase their ability to secure additional investment, build their organizational capacity and attract new community partners. The Citi Foundation is looking for the next 40 Community Progress Makers. Eligible organizations can apply here by December 18, 2017.

  • Citi FinTech & The Age of the Customer

By Linda Duncombe, Chief Marketing Officer, Citi FinTech October 23, 2017 02:45 PM

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to witness digital transformation first-hand and have long been impressed by the awesome power customers wield. When I joined Citi FinTech about 18 months ago, I was excited to be part of a customer-centric, Silicon Valley-style team serving as a spearhead for Citi’s Global Consumer Bank. Our new features and capabilities are driven by honest, everyday engagement with and feedback from our customers. Recently, I spoke at Efma’s Banking Innovation Forum in Toronto and shared with the conference participants a few of the lessons we’ve learned.
