Murder rates among young people in London have dramatically increased in recent years. Lesser knife offences also rose to nearly 13,000 in 2017, up 23 percent from the prior year. Such statistics are shocking, saddening, and deeply devastating for the young people involved, their families, and the communities affected.

  • Each of These Cities Wants to Grow Its Local Network of Entrepreneurs

By Matt Baer, Senior Associate for Public Sector Innovation at Living Cities and Rodrick Miller, President & CEO of Ascendant Global June 19, 2018 04:00 PM

    Americans love entrepreneurs.

Politicians of both parties routinely call small businesses “the backbone of our economy.” Plenty of well-known books and movies profile owners of both real-life and fictional companies; on popular TV shows like "Shark Tank," aspiring entrepreneurs compete for money from successful investors. Countless podcasts, master classes and inspirational online talks have been devoted to small businesses and the self-starters who run them.

  • On Opportunity, Success and International Women’s Day: A Conversation Between Citi Foundation’s Brandee McHale and Pathways to Progress Participant Spandana Singh

By Spandana Singh, Millennial Public Policy Fellow, New America March 05, 2018 12:00 PM

While I have always understood the mission of International Women’s Day (IWD) to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, I didn’t actually engage until I came across #InternationalWomensDay. Each year, millions of people on social media post about what the day means to them and the women who have inspired them. Before social media, this particular movement felt out of reach for most people to get involved. But as people around the world posted their own stories, it gave the movement a face. Since then, numerous hashtags have gained substantial traction and have succeeded in raising awareness of issues often touched upon by International Women’s Day leaders while also engaging people across generations to share their experiences and propose solutions.

One of our first projects at the Center for Urban Innovation was to convene about 30 leaders of businesses and non-profits, government officials, and philanthropic grantmakers in a working group on the topic of inclusive innovation. Over the course of three convenings, the group identified four high-priority topics: values, tools, co-creation and civic engagement.
