Last month marked the fifth summer that Citi served as the title sponsor of the Citi Open Tennis Tournament in Washington, D.C., which raises funding and awareness for the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF), the tournament’s non-profit owner and beneficiary. Our sponsorship of this event provides us with a unique opportunity to show our support for a city and a community where we have maintained a strong presence for more than century.

The WTEF is a remarkable organization that has been improving the lives of underserved youth in Washington, D.C. for 60 years. As one of the few tournaments in the world operated by a non-profit organization, The Citi Open is a noteworthy example of how a corporation and a charitable group can work together towards the common goal of improving people’s lives.

  • Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's Annual Tennis Ball

By Candi Wolff, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Government Affairs, Citi June 01, 2015 10:00 AM

Citi was honored to be the presenting sponsor of the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) annual Tennis Ball earlier this month. The event brings together Washingtonians in support of WTEF, its programs and the student athletes it serves. As WTEF's largest fundraising event, the Tennis Ball includes silent and live auctions, as well as the "Fund a Future" auction, where guests were invited to make a contribution directly from their mobile device or by visiting the WTEF website following the online donation link. WTEF again set high fundraising goals, and I am so proud to report that they these goals were met through the generosity of so many people focused on investing in the future of Washington D.C.'s youth. Indeed, over $1 million was raised for WTEF and its programs.

We are again in the midst of the Citi Open, which began July 28 and will run through August 4, at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park. With Citi taking over as the tournament's title sponsor, we have seen the event grow both on and off the court this year.

Proceeds from the Citi Open benefit the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation (WTEF), a non-profit organization designed to provide academic enrichment, supplemented by tennis and life skills, to at-risk Washington, DC youth.
