  • The Citi Choir, a Year On

By Raf Lopez, Talent Manager, Citi Human Resources EMEA August 12, 2014 11:42 AM

The Citi Choir was featured as part of a 2013 BBC TV series 'The Choir: Sing While You Work', fronted by well-known choirmaster, Gareth Malone. For this series the concept was to create choirs from scratch in five UK organisations. The program was seen by over 2.9 million viewers toward the end of last year.

We weren't sure how many people would be brave enough to put themselves out there to participate, but as it turned out, hundreds came to audition. Gareth Malone eventually selected 22 people who he thought would best represent the breadth of what Citi does and the diversity of our people - as well as being great singers of course.

  • Six Continents + 93 Countries + 479 Cities = 1 'Epic' Global Community Day

By Florencia Spangaro, Director, Stakeholder Engagement and Strategy, Citi Foundation June 19, 2014 04:55 PM

More than 70,000 Citi colleagues, friends and family and alums came together in the days leading and including the 7th of June, as one global volunteer team. We reached 479 cities across 93 countries, and Citi volunteers got involved with a variety of activities, from hands-on to skills-based work.

We built homes, restored parks and helped increase financial literacy among today's youth. Although we gave back in a variety of ways, we came together for one common purpose: to demonstrate our strong and continued commitment to enabling progress in the communities in which we live, work and have a presence.

  • U.S. Conference of Mayors - Helping Cities Drive Solutions to Urban Challenges

By Bill Mills, CEO for North America, Citi January 29, 2014 02:53 PM

Last week I had the privilege of joining nearly 300 mayors and city leaders, in Washington, D.C. at the 82nd U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting. Citi was represented by a strong delegation of colleagues from across the company who were able to engage in a candid dialogue and advance relationships with key stakeholders. Our shared conversations provoked both thought and action around ways to address the complex challenges facing U.S. cities -- and given Citi's focus on urbanization as a driver of global economic trends, our team had a lot to contribute to the dialogue.

I was heartened to hear the optimism expressed by leaders of cities large and small about the ongoing economic recovery. Throughout the event, as mayors shared "Innovation Moments" that highlighted local successes, it was especially encouraging that so many of them were based on partnerships with private sector stakeholders -- including Citi and many of our institutional clients.

  • Lessons from Miami, the Future of American Cities

By Angie Henderson Moncada, SVP Global Branding, Citi January 23, 2014 04:19 PM

Miami was my first city. I moved there for graduate school, stayed on to build a career, and came back to launch a venture that eventually led me to my current role at Citi. So, I had a real sense of pride yesterday at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 82nd Winter Meeting when Miami got a bit of the spotlight. Citi's North America CEO Bill Mills talked about how, in an increasingly urbanized, globalized and connected society, Miami is an example of how American cities can connect themselves to the wider world.

Miami is now home to more than 1,200 multinationals from 53 countries. Foreign multinationals and U.S.-based global organizations like Citi are progressively headquartering their Latin America operations in Miami. In fact, 800 use the city for their regional or global headquarters, with great effects on Miami's economy, tax base, and employment rolls.

  • Why a Bank Should Be in the Business of School Supplies

By Lilia M. Torres Torres, Puerto Rico Department of Education, Secretary of Administration December 17, 2013 10:57 AM

Nearly 450,000 students rely on the Puerto Rico Department of Education: From pencils to hearing aids, we are the country's biggest buyer of education equipment. In the past, our purchasing process has been cumbersome, and students often had to wait months for critical supplies.

The Puerto Rico Department of Education is financially supported by the Central Government of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Government, and spending is monitored and audited by local and federal authorities, who demand transparent, efficient and auditable administration of funds. Working with government officials to create a purchasing card program, Citi provided our school administrators better buying flexibility and offered an easier way for us to track funds. Local vendors are now paid more quickly and students receive materials faster than ever before.

  • Saluting Those Who Serve

By Suni Harford, Regional Head of Markets for North America, Citi November 11, 2013 01:07 PM

On November 6, Veterans on Wall Street, a consortium of large financial institutions including Citi, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs, was the presenting sponsor of the Stand up for Heroes concert in New York City to benefit the Bob Woodruff Foundation. It was an extraordinary evening of music and laughter, that was made even more meaningful thanks to the generosity of our clients, vendors and colleagues who helped us raise critical funds to support our injured men and women in uniform as they return home.

Tomorrow, Veterans on Wall Street will host our third annual career conference, convening veteran job-seekers, charitable organizations and HR professionals from over 150 companies, to share best practices around veteran employment issues. Veterans on Wall Street is aligned with the broader Citi Salutes initiative, created to bridge and expand upon existing company efforts aimed at serving veteran consumers and recruiting veterans for careers at the company and the financial services industry.

  • A Banamex Tradition: Sea Turtle Conservation in Mexico

By Luis Alonso Martinez, Community Relations, Banamex October 17, 2013 02:43 PM

Getting back to nature and helping sea turtles has been a Banamex tradition for eight years and such a popular one that 1,000 employees applied to volunteer at this summer's Sea Turtle Conservation & Community Development program. Over the years, the program has been developed in partnership with the Mexican government and local communities where the sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Mexico is home to seven of the world's eight species of sea turtles, which makes preserving these animals a key priority for our country. In a scant eight years, 513 Mexican and U.S. volunteers have donated 34,880 hours of service to set up 13 sea turtle camps across Mexico, preserved and protected 16,241 sea turtle eggs and released 34,764 baby turtles into the sea.

  • Citi Spotlight: How Claudia Perez Penuelas Helps Build a More Secure Future

By Claudia Perez Penuelas, Compliance Director, Anti-Money Laundering, Citi September 26, 2013 03:05 PM

Financial crime isn't limited to Ponzi schemes, tax evasion, or even credit fraud. Each year, hundreds of millions of dollars are funneled into Mexico and Latin America for the purpose of supporting organized crime.

As the Director of Anti-Money Laundering Business Advisory function at Banamex, it's my responsibility to ensure that we prevent our bank from being used for such crime. Much of that work is derived from risk assessment--in other words, analyzing the range of day-to-day activities at Banamex, as well as the nature of the products and services we offer to customers.
