Last year we created the Citi Mobile Challenge: a global initiative through which we leverage outside-in innovation to unleash the power of the tech community, develop new solutions and disrupt the way our bank innovates. Through this virtual competition, we ask developers to build new FinTech solutions using Citi's APIs, and to present their working prototypes at Demo Day events held throughout each region. The program lives at the nexus of banking, technology and innovation and gives us a way to engage the creativity and experience of developers to improve the lives of our clients.

  • Citi FinTech Meetup Miami: How Financial Technology Can Drive Financial Inclusion

By Marshall Sitten, Vice President, Communications, Citi Community Development, Jorge Ruiz, Business Development and Digital Banking Head, Citi Latin America April 21, 2015 10:00 AM

Technology can play a vital role in bringing more people into the financial mainstream. While most may think that’s a greater demand in the developing world, some of America’s largest cities struggle with the financial isolation of huge groups of their populations.

We see one of the starkest domestic examples in Miami.

  • Wonder: Our Experience with the Citi Mobile Challenge

By Gerry Goldstein, CEO and Co-Founder, Wonder April 17, 2015 10:00 AM

At Wonder, we’re trying to reinvent the gift card and democratize distribution for merchants of all types and sizes. We’ve developed the first closed-loop eGifting platform that links stored value to existing credit cards, allowing consumers to discover and purchase e-gift cards at virtually any store in the US and redeem automatically when they pay. Merchants get new customers and can strengthen their customer relationships while consumers get choice, convenience and instant gratification.

As a newcomer in the financial services industry, we decided to enter the Citi Mobile Challenge in the U.S. because we saw a lot of value in partnering with a bank. Trust and access to financial transaction data is at the very heart of our proposition. As a respected financial institution, we felt Citi could help us address these issues and also help us bring our innovation to a mass audience.

  • Reflecting Back On Mobile World Congress 2015

By Greg Baxter, Managing Director, Citi Global Head of Digital Strategy March 25, 2015 08:00 AM

This year was the fourth time I’ve had the opportunity to participate as a member of the Citi Delegation to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona. MWC is by far the largest telecommunications industry event and over the past decade it has morphed from an industry trade-show to a global showcase on the impact of mobility and how digital technologies are reshaping our lives. MWC included more than 90,000 attendees and 2,000 exhibitors giving Citi a great opportunity to interact with key customers, learn about new and exciting technologies and meet with current and potential partners and vendors.

The Citi delegation included a cross-section of Citi with more than 30 participants representing nearly every geography and many lines of business, including Treasury and Trade Solutions, Investment Banking, Operations & Technology, Consumer banking, our Innovation Labs, Global Digital Strategy, and more.

  • Citi Mobile Challenge

By Itziar Diez Canedo, Vice President, Digital Strategy, Digital Banking & Business Development, Latin America August 08, 2014 02:44 PM

The financial technology industry is growing at a very rapid pace with a strong emergence of companies and solutions dedicated to improving people's experience with their banks. Digital-only banks with a simple user-interface, that help users visualize and manage their finances more intuitively on their smartphones are just some examples. This wave of innovation is creating disruption in the banking industry and establishing a new normal for developers of digital financial solutions and how these solutions are built.

You no longer need to be a bank to develop the "next big thing" in banking. The digital world moves at lightning speed, and barriers to entry for developing an app or a digital solution are lower than ever. It is the designers, coders and engineers who are developing the new financial solutions, and that is precisely the talent we are looking to tap into and collaborate with through the Citi Mobile Challenge competition.

  • Living In A Better World: 3 Ways Digitization Makes Our World a More Sustainable Place

By Jonathan Larsen, Head of Consumer Banking, Asia Pacific May 07, 2013 11:36 AM

Digitization is a hot topic as more of the world moves toward online banking. For Citi, digitization is important because of the ways we use technological advances to make the world not only more convenient, but more sustainable. One progressive part of Citi's digitization efforts is the recent unveiling of Citibank Express, a machine that links physical and digital banking channels, allowing customers to do almost all of their banking outside of a branch. These are the three ways this development helps make the world a better place:

  • New Smart Banking ATM Citibank Express Creates Next-Gen Customer Experience

By Jonathan Larsen, Global Head of Retail Banking and Head of Consumer Banking, Citi January 29, 2013 09:00 AM

Since Citi's founding in 1812, we have applied our passion for innovation to connect clients to the world. Our most recent example of this innovative spirit is Citibank Express - a "Smart Banking" machine that allows customers to do almost all of their banking without visiting a branch, including opening accounts and applying for loans, cards and cashier's checks. The first Citibank Express machines were unveiled last week at Citibank branches in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Citibank Express is equipped with an online banking connection, video-conferencing and biometric capabilities for customer identity authentication. A customer can start a transaction on a computer or mobile device and complete it on Citibank Express--and vice versa. Citibank Express's "split screen" makes navigation intuitive. The screen can display personalized promotions and offers, and allows clients to see and speak with a customer service representative on one screen while conducting business on the other. The machines have near field communication capabilities as well as scanning and embossing functions to allow for future roll-outs of functions such as instant printing of credit and ATM cards.
