  • Diversity Discussions with Citi Executives

By Jamie Forese, President, Citi and Head of ICG and Bob Annibale, Global Director of Citi Inclusive Finance and Community Development June 19, 2017 10:00 AM

Why do you think it is important to have the Affinity Leader role and why did you take on this role for Pride?

JF: Citi has been sponsoring diversity networks across our firm for a long time, and I’m proud of all we’ve done to support all of them. With respect to our LGBT colleagues, I feel that my direct involvement at the Affinity level can help bring further support for the community and send a message that we truly are committed to making Citi’s workplace even more comfortable.

  • Discussing Diversity & Gender Equality with Citi Executives

By Jim Cowles, Citi CEO EMEA, and Tracey Warson, Head of Citi Private Bank North America April 07, 2017 11:00 AM

From your perspective, how does Diversity drive business outcomes?

JC: Our business is about opportunity and risk. And the only way we can strike a rational balance between those two elements of our decision-making is to create more diversity of perspective in our work force. We get closer to that goal by building more diverse teams composed of people with different experiences, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities, economic backgrounds and sexual orientations. Effectively harnessing that diversity of perspectives will help us truly explore and realize the full potential of what Citi can offer our colleagues and clients.

TW: We know from research that we need to have at least a 30% cohort of women in the room for our voice to be heard. My commitment is to model the way for others and to demonstrate that when we have diverse and gender-balanced leadership teams, we have better business outcomes. In my business in Citi Private Bank North America, my Leadership Team is 38% women, and we have grown our business year-over-year in the past three years to record highs.

  • How the Military Prepared Me for the Private Sector

By Micah Heavener, Managing Director, Global Consumer Bank, Citi & Prior Captain, U.S. Army November 11, 2016 10:00 AM

I am one of America’s 21.2 million veterans. I spent the early 2000s as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. Part of that time included a year in Afghanistan split between Kandahar and Zabul provinces where I served as a liaison to the United Nations and later with my infantry unit. At the end of my rotation, I faced one of the toughest decisions: what’s next?

Like most veterans, as I was making this transition to civilian life, the last thing I wanted was pity. I wanted to continue to contribute, to be part of a team, and help an organization succeed. I knew I could produce if given the opportunity, but I was not sure how my skills and experiences translated into the private sector.

Luckily for me, I joined a company that actively pursues veterans, and offers programs designed to help them start a career and assimilate into the workforce. Citi’s commitment to veterans did more than offer me the chance to contribute – it was a clear signal the company valued what I had to offer and they were willing to invest in me.

  • Citi Leaders Named to the 2016 OUTstanding/Financial Times Leading LGBT & Ally Executives Lists

By Terry Hogan, Global Head of Diversity and Director, Talent Management, Citi October 26, 2016 09:45 AM

I am delighted to share the news that again this year, two of our senior executives appear in the 2016 OUTstanding/Financial Times Leading LGBT & Ally Executives lists. Citi’s Jim Cowles, CEO of Europe, Middle East and Africa and Bob Annibale, Global Director for Citi Inclusive Finance & Community Development, have been named by OUTstanding/FT for their demonstration of Citi’s commitment to the LGBT community, and for working tirelessly inside and outside the bank to achieve positive change for LGBT people.

OUTstanding, which was founded in 2013 to demonstrate that “LGBT+ executives could be visible, safe and successful in business”, publishes these lists each year to support the ideal that LGBT+ employees will not be held back or live in fear of discrimination because of who they are.

  • Empowering Female Leaders across Citi’s Network in Africa

By Joyce-Ann Wainaina, CEO of Citibank East Africa September 07, 2016 03:15 PM

Citi’s Diversity Strategy is a key to our success, ensuring that the Citi workforce is as vibrant and innovative as the communities it serves. In my position as CEO of Citibank East Africa, I feel privileged to be able to bring this strategy to life every day by working to increase opportunities for female executives across Africa’s overwhelmingly male-dominated banking industry.

There are many reasons why women, particularly in Africa, don’t always rise to the top. Some are social, some economic, and some cultural. As the first woman and first Kenyan to serve as CEO of Citibank East Africa, I’m personally all too familiar with the challenges women can face as they move into leadership roles. In Africa in particular, networking opportunities are far too often few and far between.

In 2015, after realizing that there were only three African women in managing director roles across the Citi network in Sub Saharan Africa, a few of my fellow female senior executives at Citi and I decided that rather than allow other women to go through the same struggles as so many of us who came before them had done, that we should start a mentoring program to give them the right tools and opportunities to succeed in their careers.

  • International Women's Day: It Takes All of Us

By Jamie Forese, President of Citigroup and Head of the Institutional Clients Group February 29, 2016 04:00 PM

Throughout the month of March, Citi celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD). International Women’s Day, championed by Citi Diversity and Citi Women, is one of the most visible and inclusive expressions of Citi’s commitment to helping women succeed. Last year, Citi engaged our clients, employees and community partners by hosting 231 local events in 134 cities from 90 countries and we are on track for similar participation in 2016.

Our 2016 theme for International Women’s Day reflects Citi’s position that diversity and inclusion requires the engagement of all employees: It takes all of us.

  • Thanking Those Who Serve

By Suni Harford, Regional Head of Markets, North America, Citi November 11, 2015 09:30 AM

Veterans Day is a reminder and an opportunity to thank our men and women in uniform for their service and to recognize their tremendous courage and sacrifice. I'm proud of the support Citi has shown our veterans over the years, and we're honored to continue supporting them through our programs, community involvement and volunteer activities year-round. Through our Citi Salutes initiative and other programs, all of us at Citi aim to forge lasting relationships with the men and women of our firm who have served their country.

Just yesterday, Veterans on Wall Street hosted its fifth Veteran Employment Symposium and Hiring Fair in New York. Citi played a leading role in co-founding the coalition and co-hosting the annual event, which has raised nearly $6 million in recent years to assist military members and their families as they transition back into civilian life. And last month, we worked exclusively with veteran-owned firms to syndicate a $1.5 billion bond issuance, demonstrating our commitment to providing opportunities to the veterans’ community.
