  • Empowering Female Leaders across Citi’s Network in Africa

By Joyce-Ann Wainaina, CEO of Citibank East Africa September 07, 2016 03:15 PM

Citi’s Diversity Strategy is a key to our success, ensuring that the Citi workforce is as vibrant and innovative as the communities it serves. In my position as CEO of Citibank East Africa, I feel privileged to be able to bring this strategy to life every day by working to increase opportunities for female executives across Africa’s overwhelmingly male-dominated banking industry.

There are many reasons why women, particularly in Africa, don’t always rise to the top. Some are social, some economic, and some cultural. As the first woman and first Kenyan to serve as CEO of Citibank East Africa, I’m personally all too familiar with the challenges women can face as they move into leadership roles. In Africa in particular, networking opportunities are far too often few and far between.

In 2015, after realizing that there were only three African women in managing director roles across the Citi network in Sub Saharan Africa, a few of my fellow female senior executives at Citi and I decided that rather than allow other women to go through the same struggles as so many of us who came before them had done, that we should start a mentoring program to give them the right tools and opportunities to succeed in their careers.

  • International Women's Day: It Takes All of Us

By Jamie Forese, President of Citigroup and Head of the Institutional Clients Group February 29, 2016 04:00 PM

Throughout the month of March, Citi celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD). International Women’s Day, championed by Citi Diversity and Citi Women, is one of the most visible and inclusive expressions of Citi’s commitment to helping women succeed. Last year, Citi engaged our clients, employees and community partners by hosting 231 local events in 134 cities from 90 countries and we are on track for similar participation in 2016.

Our 2016 theme for International Women’s Day reflects Citi’s position that diversity and inclusion requires the engagement of all employees: It takes all of us.

  • Thanking Those Who Serve

By Suni Harford, Regional Head of Markets, North America, Citi November 11, 2015 09:30 AM

Veterans Day is a reminder and an opportunity to thank our men and women in uniform for their service and to recognize their tremendous courage and sacrifice. I'm proud of the support Citi has shown our veterans over the years, and we're honored to continue supporting them through our programs, community involvement and volunteer activities year-round. Through our Citi Salutes initiative and other programs, all of us at Citi aim to forge lasting relationships with the men and women of our firm who have served their country.

Just yesterday, Veterans on Wall Street hosted its fifth Veteran Employment Symposium and Hiring Fair in New York. Citi played a leading role in co-founding the coalition and co-hosting the annual event, which has raised nearly $6 million in recent years to assist military members and their families as they transition back into civilian life. And last month, we worked exclusively with veteran-owned firms to syndicate a $1.5 billion bond issuance, demonstrating our commitment to providing opportunities to the veterans’ community.

  • Diverse Services for Diverse Immigrant Communities

By Bob Annibale, Global Director of Citi Community Development and Microfinance August 25, 2014 02:58 PM

At a conference in Washington D.C. last month, when the audience of U.S. federal and city officials, community organizations and business representatives started nodding in unison, I knew I had hit a nerve: Immigrants are not a homogeneous group, and it is critical that we develop multiple pathways to citizenship, an important asset for economic success in America.

From highly skilled workers to students, asylum seekers to entrepreneurs, different groups require different financial training, education and employment support. This approach will better help the 8.8 million legal permanent residents who have documents, pay taxes and work lawfully, and yet aren't citizens because of varied barriers.

  • The Citi Choir, a Year On

By Raf Lopez, Talent Manager, Citi Human Resources EMEA August 12, 2014 11:42 AM

The Citi Choir was featured as part of a 2013 BBC TV series 'The Choir: Sing While You Work', fronted by well-known choirmaster, Gareth Malone. For this series the concept was to create choirs from scratch in five UK organisations. The program was seen by over 2.9 million viewers toward the end of last year.

We weren't sure how many people would be brave enough to put themselves out there to participate, but as it turned out, hundreds came to audition. Gareth Malone eventually selected 22 people who he thought would best represent the breadth of what Citi does and the diversity of our people - as well as being great singers of course.

  • Citi Celebrates its Pride, Passion and Progress

By John Henry Watson, Program Lead, Citi Institutional Clients Group Operations & Technology and co-chair of Citi Pride Network, NYC July 09, 2014 02:39 PM

In June, Citi celebrated Pride Month with a variety of local community and employee awareness and volunteer events, as well as Pride flag raisings at sites around the U.S., and participation in Pride parades in the U.S. and in London. This year, Citi had over 1,000 employees, friends and family participating in Pride celebrations around the world. In New York, over 650 employees, friends and allies of Citi marched together in the Pride parade. The Pride Month events are always well received by Pride Network members and demonstrate Citi's commitment to LGBT employees and allies.

The past few years have seen great growth and progress for Citi's Pride Networks globally. The Citi Pride Network now has more than 2,000 employees, recently welcoming networks in Mexico City, Budapest, Belfast, Hong Kong and Florence, Kentucky. Citigroup CEO Mike Corbat and several senior managers reinforced their commitment to Diversity by partnering with the Citi Pride Network to make Citi the only U.S. Retail Bank to sign on to the Amicus Brief making the business case against DOMA last year and by hosting the "Out of the Street" summit in May 2014. Citi and the Citi Pride Network received both the AVP Courage Award and the OPEN Finance Corporate Leadership Award in 2013 and are now finalists for the 2014 Outie Award from Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. Also in 2013, Global Workforce Diversity launched educational "I am an Ally" placards that can be displayed in any workspace.

  • Living in a Better World: Protecting Biodiversity through Collaboration

By Mark Eckstein, Managing Director of WWF-US, International Finance June 05, 2013 04:39 PM

For more than 50 years, World Wildlife Fund has been at the forefront of global species conservation. We employ a variety of strategies, from confronting poachers in the field, to protecting important habitats, to working with governments to enact smart policies. During the past decade, we've been focused on an increasingly important track: engagement with the world's biggest companies and financial institutions to enhance our efforts.

    Our Work with Companies:
Much of WWFs work with the private sector focuses on strategic food and fiber sectors whose production and trade can threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services globally. We work with producers to demonstrate the business case for more sustainable production, and we work with multi-stakeholder groups to develop sustainability standards, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, that can shift production practices at scale. Another example is WWF's Global Forest & Trade Network that provides sustainability guidance to forestry companies and those purchasing and financing forest products. As our partner, Citigroup has been an active member of the GFTN North America advisory board for the past six years in support of this work.
