  • Citi Marks Pride Month 2015 – Part 5

    June 24, 2015 11:00 AM

In recognition of Pride Month, a time to reflect upon the civil rights history and contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, we will be sharing personal reflections and stories of progress from individuals, both LGBT and straight allies, as they examine what it means to bring their full self to work.

Alan Houmann, Head of Government Affairs, EMEA – London, UK

When I talk about my partner, I bring my full self to work.

Bringing my home life into the office, even in small, casual conversational ways, used to be stressful. Standard stuff, like chatting in the Monday morning coffee queue – "How was your weekend? What did you and your ...er, other half do?" – could feel intrusive even if you were out, and intimidating if you weren't. Years ago, I assumed that my personal decision to say “he” (not the more neutral "my partner" or "they") would be enough to change the entire dynamic of a conversation. But not once in my eight years at Citi have any of my colleagues paused, blinked, or looked startled.

John Healy, Belfast Citi Service Center Site Head – Belfast, Ireland

When I attend Citi Pride Network events, I bring my full self to work.

As the site head at the Belfast Service Center, I am a public figure in the workplace and externally in the community in which we operate. I see my role as the Business Sponsor of the Citi Pride network in Belfast as an important extension of being site head. By supporting the network and attending the events that are organised I believe that I am demonstrating one of the core values of Citi, inclusiveness.

Simon Feeke, Director of Membership Programmes, Stonewall – London, UK

When I am open and honest with clients, I bring my whole self to work.

Even though I work for Stonewall, Europe’s largest LGBT equality charity, I, like many gay people, have to come out every day. I lead our Workplace Program which means I am out in a fairly high profile way with stakeholders and clients, whether I like it or not!

  • Celebrating a Decade of Coming Together and Giving Back

By Brandee McHale, President of the Citi Foundation and Director of Corporate Citizenship, Citi June 17, 2015 01:00 PM

For the past ten years, Citi volunteers have participated in over 11,000 Global Community Day activities, contributing more than two million hours of service through our annual event. In the days leading up to and including June 13th, more than 80,000 Citi colleagues, friends and family, alums and clients joined together as one global volunteer team for our tenth anniversary.

We volunteered in nearly 500 cities across 93 countries and territories, and the diverse range of activities reflects our tradition of thinking globally and acting locally. With more than 1,200 service projects, ranging from neighborhood clean ups and home building, financial literacy and mentoring young people to environmental conservation and disaster relief efforts. In true Global Community Day fashion, we gave back in many different ways, but with one common purpose: demonstrating our strong and continued commitment to enabling progress in the communities in which we live and work.

Weber Lo, Citi Country Officer and Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong and Macau

When I adhere to the values of Integrity, Passion and Transparency, I bring my full self to work.

Success will come and go, but integrity is forever. Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a moment to lose.

Antonio “Tony” Castanon, Managing Director, Citi Retail Services

When I am transparent and authentic, I bring my full self to work.

Today I am a beacon for self-expression and authenticity. But not long ago, I was at a very different place in my life. My journey spans 30 years of denying and suppressing who I was and how I felt about being accepted by other communities of people. I have learned that living out of harmony with my true inner-self is damaging to the soul, as well as just plain exhausting!

  • Citi’s 10th Annual Global Community Day – Are You In?

By Brandee McHale, President of the Citi Foundation and Director of Corporate Citizenship, Citi May 27, 2015 03:30 PM

On Saturday, June 13th, Citi will mark its 10th Annual Global Community Day. For the past nine years, we have marked this annual day of service by donating our time, skills and expertise to make positive impacts in the communities where we live and work. This year, as in years past, tens of thousands of Citi colleagues from cities large and small will join their families and friends in this proud Citi tradition.

Since the inaugural Global Community Day in 2006, we have seen communities and lives transformed due -- in large part -- to the combined efforts of our community partners and the more than half a million Citi volunteers who have contributed more than two million hours of service to Global Community Day projects. While these statistics help quantify the extent of our impact from a macro perspective, on a more personal level we see the tangible impacts that Global Community Day has made for individuals and communities.

Every year, JA reaches more than 10 million youth across 123 countries, and 50 states within the United States, working to improve their financial and entrepreneurship skills as well as providing them with the resources needed to gain employment, start their own businesses, and begin to accumulate financial assets through savings. In today’s economy, these skills provide young people with invaluable tools for building their future and achieving their ambitions.
